COUNTY CONSIDERING CHRISTMAS BONUS TO EMPLOYEES
Posted by: skidoc2go

That's right you heard it here first! Tom Miller and the board are considering to give the hard working employees of Placer County a bonus this Christmas. They are meeting on November 25, 2008 at 9 am at the "Domes". Slow down I can hear you all saying, how can that be, the economy is horrible and Placer County is losing millions of dollars, well, you are wrong, Placer County is not losing millions of dollars. The 07/08 total assessment (secured and unsecured) was $57,549,806,956, the assessment for 08/09 was $58,856,471,158, and that's in bad times. You do the math, it went up $130,666,420. Wow that's alot of money! So this county isn't hurting to bad even with the decline in the market. You are now wondering what kind of bonus they are considering. Well when it comes to Tom Miller, it's nothing but the best for his employees, they are all going to get Christmas week off, that's right, the whole week! You know what else? he's not even going to pay them, not even for the Federal holiday on the 25th. It's called mantatory time off. (MTO) I call it BA HUM BUG Thank's Tom and Merry Christmas to you and your family. (not) With guys like you looking after his employees, who needs a Union representitive?

You say wait we have a contract, well, like propositions in this state, that california voters vote on, they are not worth the paper they are written on!

Why should they get paid for the entire week? I don't. If they don't like it get a real job.

PS...you better check your numbers...57 billion dollars?

hey auburnnative,

look up, it went over your head, they are being told they have to take the week off, without pay, I would like to see what you would do if you came in and your boss said don't come to work next week, and by the way we are not paying you that week also.

PS you check the numbers, here is the road map to get you there you idiot: http://www.placer.ca.gov/Departments/Auditor/Budget/~/media/aud/documents/budget08/C6%20Analysis%20of%20Current%20Prop%20Taxes.ashx

The numbers used appear to be assesments (value of property, etc.), not revenues. More like 107 million plus in revenue? I am glad property taxes are not equal to assessment values.....

you are right timeslip, and the county tax is 1% of the assessment value , the numbers look GREAT, there is no reason that the county needs to lay off employees for a week, with numbers like this.

I've worked for a number of private businesses that have closed over the holidays for various reasons; e.g. inventory, maintenance, lack of business, etc. We could use vacation time if we had it on the books or not be paid. I think the county being prudent during these fiscal times is reasonable. The workers should be grateful they have a job to come back to. Some of us were laid off for a "seasonal slowdown" and when it never picked up, have not returned to work. It's often said if the government were ran like a business they would never survive. I'm in favor of this action.

I totally agree with you, all we asked is that the rules and regulations are followed when you want to break a contract, and Tom Miller is not. In case America has forgotton, we have contracts for a reason, and they should be followed, and if you want to change it, then wait until it has expired and renogotiate, or follow the rules on how to re-open it!

Thank you. You make reasonable points and I agree. It's easier for me to understand when the nonsupporting information is removed. If there is a contract, both parties should be held to contract and unless there are specific guidelines for deviation, it should be followed to the letter. If this is not being followed it would seem you have some cause for action. NO? Why?

skidoc2go, It's bad enough to call someone an idiot, it's even worse when it is you who have no clue what you are talking about. My guess is you are a County Employee ( a union one at that), or close to one and that is why you are so angry that the County is being responsible. It's scary that this is the level of intelligence our taxpayers are getting. The taxes may be 1% but the county only receives an average of 20% of the 1% (the rest going mostly to schools and other local agencies), which would make their increase less than $3 million dollars from your numbers. The employees salary increases year over year are way more than that (because they are way overpaid) so there goes that increase, down the tubes and after it the County is still in the hole because of the inflated salary's. I for one am very happy that the County is trying to save my taxpayer money! I just would hope that Mr. Miller is included in this no pay option as I bet he is the highest paid of all.

Mrcalob,

All i can say is, your WRONG, the county tax is 1%, schools, sewers, mesquito abatement and other misc. are taxed at different rates. It usually comes out to about 1.25% total. Thats why most real etate agents will quote you 1.25% when you want to figure what your annual tax bill will be. It does vary though, according to what city you live in and so on. The county is 1% and it is constant, and it goes to the county. All you have to do is open your tax bill and look.

As far as Tom Miller goes, I don't know if he has included himself in this or not. My guess is that he is not, and you are right on that point, he should be. I guess we will find out on the 25th,

And Rolandmc, thank you for being open minded.

What I did not get from the web site was the country budget. How much in the red are they? I assume that projected revenues will be impacted by foreclosure, etc. In any case, govenment needs to downsize when costs exceed revenue. Time off without pay is one way of downsizing, there are worse... And I worry it will get worse before it gets better.

skidoc2go, call the Tax Collector's office and ask (530) 889-4120. The County collects the 1% and sends the non-county share to the other agencies. You are right, sometimes there are additional special district and school fees that make the taxes even higher such as bonds, mela roos, etc, but that does not change the fact that on average only 20% of the 1% actually goes to the County. Schools get the vast majority. Sorry, my first comment is still 100% true.

I agree, it will be interesting to see if he includes himself, he sure should. I'm glad we can agree on that.

The board still has to look at this and see if they are going to support all or part of it. If they buy off the next step is probably court with the union. My question is what happened to the forecast and budget process that they have to take extreme measures to begin with. Seems to me we should let a new CEO and a few new senior staffers decide how to to deal with the budget problems. The BOS and senior staff just don't seem to have things in order lately.

skidoo2go, Tom Miller and his Chief Assistant make more than the Governor of California. But then, they have much more responsibility than the Guv, don't they?

They will retire as soon as they reach 55, wait and see. In the meantime, they will do whatever is necessary to improve their retirement even it it is on the backs of employees.
