Note: The following was printed as a Letter to the Editor in the Loomis News on 10-9-08:
I am supporting Gary Liss for Loomis Town Council, because he will bring balance and new innovative ideas to our Town Council.
We need balance on the council. In our last election, the Building Industry Association of Northern California targeted our council race and spent $14,000 promoting their candidates.
They didn’t win every seat, just enough to give the building industry a pro-growth council with a 3-to-2 majority. That’s enough to control any decision. Since our last election, your council has appointed a pro-growth planning commission, attempted to dismantle the town’s Open Space Commission, ignored the General Plan by allowing sound walls and gated communities, and for the first time, denied the public a right to be heard by the council because a developer asked them to.
I have watched Gary Liss serve as the Chairman of our Parks and Open Space Commission. He is passionate about preserving open space and fostering public involvement in our decision-making process. He has brought forward new ideas that will preserve the ideals and resources that are important to our community and brought the public back into the planning process.
You can read the Open Space Committee’s report at www.loomis.ca.gov [Gary Liss note: for shortcut, see "Links to Issues" at: http://www.garyliss.com/loomis/id5.html]. The current pro-growth majority is stalling the adoption of this report.
Please join me in supporting Gary Liss for Loomis Town Council and bring an important balance back to our Town Council. Thanks for reading my letter.
Walt Scherer

Gary Liss is one of the most refreshing, visionary, positive candidates to ever run for office in a long time. Loomis citizens may not realize what his presence on the Loomis Town Council will mean in terms of keeping Loomis the sustainably growing town it was incorporated to be. His integrity, honesty, fairness, experience and knowledge are all above reproach; but more importantly, he gives every civic project he has ever worked on more than 200%.
Loomis is indeed very fortunate to have a candidate of Gary Liss's caliber willing to serve the community. Don't miss this golden opportunity: Vote for ONE candidate only (not two). Spare Loomis from the disastrous direction it's moving in--Vote Gary Liss for Loomis Town Council.
The incumbents are nice people with ties to the community, but they care more about protecting developer property rights than the citizens' rights to their small town we all know and love. Loomis has money and doesn't need to cave in to outsiders. Take a look at the budget and you'll see that we're not in dire straights like other communities. Your vote sends a message, and now is the time to use it.
