Loomis Grammar School principal Rick Judd, who was named California Principal of the Year for 2008, has been re-admitted to the hospital for treatment of burns he suffered in a fire last week, according to his sister-in-law, Lisa Flowers, of Rocklin.
Flowers said that Judd was taken to the UC Davis emergency room Tuesday, Oct. 7, because of extreme pain and admitted to the UC Davis Burn Center in Davis. Doctors determined that burns on one of his legs are third degree and may require skin graft surgery.
On Oct. 2, Judd, 46, suffered what was orginally thought to be second-degree burns on 20 percent of his body in a propane tank fire at his Rocklin home. No one else was injured in the accident
Flowers said Judd was working with the propane tanks on his barbecue when the accident occurred. The burns are primarily on his arms, hands, face and legs. Judd was treated overnight at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Robin Montgomery, spokesperson for the Roseville hospital, said Judd was released Oct. 3. Judd was later seen by doctors at UC Davis Regional Burn Center.
In June, Judd was named Principal of the Year for California by the Elementary Council of the Association of California School Administrators. An association representative presented the award and explained it is given in each state to recognize “outstanding leadership of active, online principals … leaders who truly make a difference.”
The association was planning to send Judd and his wife, Linda, to Washington, D.C. later in October for a black-tie reception with the Secretary of Education. But, according to Flowers, that trip may not happen because of Judd's injuries.
News of Judd’s accident arrived during a closed-session portion of the monthly Loomis Union School District trustee meeting, just after the accident occurred. The trustees adjourned their meeting early out of concern for Judd.
Judd has been with the Loomis school district for 21 years as a teacher and an administrator. In 2000, he became principal at Loomis School. Judd taught grades five and six and taught math and physical education to seventh and eighth graders. He also served as vice principal at Franklin and Placer Elementary schools for two years.
