With the exception of one young freshman who crashed the party, the top of the leaderboard at the Sierra Foothill League’s first league-wide girls cross country meet looked very similar to what we saw last year. With Granite Bay’s Brooke Holt winning the race, and Christine Zavesky finishing third, with Del Oro’s Emma Freeman in fourth, followed by Stephanie Romo (Woodcreek), Courtney Crosta (Woodcreek) and Shayna Powless (Roseville) it was an impressive front group. The new name on the list was Oakmont freshman Karlie Garcia, who has burst onto the scene in the early part of the season. Garcia finished second in Wednesday’s event, just seven seconds behind defending section champion Holt. On the strength of Romo, Crosta and a deep and talented team, Woodcreek won the girls team title, finishing a significant margin ahead of second-place Granite Bay and third-place Del Oro. The Timberwolves had seven runners in the top 20, as Sami Gomez (eighth), Nicole Krsulic (11th), Ashley DeVriend (15th), Jennifer Romo (17th) and Ciara Donnelly (20th) joined Romo and Crosta in that elite group. A new Woodcreek runner has moved himself into the top of the boys field. Garrett Seawell is gone, but Tyler Raposa was the winner of league meet No. 1 at Spring View Park in Rocklin. Rocklin’s Steven White and Colin Bruice took second and third, and led their team to the group crown. Spencer Thibideau of Granite Bay, Luis Mora of Oakmont, Hunter Tyler of Woodcreek and Edixon Puglisi of Oakmont also found their way into the top 10 boys. Woodcreek finished just six points behind Rocklin in a very competitive boys field, as Woodcreek placed six in the top 20, but could not catch the Thunder, who had four top-10 runners.
