Del Oro High hurdler Casey Wheeler completed his standout high school track career by grabbing a pair of medals at last weekend?s CIF State Track and Field Championships held at Buchanan High School, in Clovis. Wheeler started his finals on Saturday with an outstanding fifth place showing in the 110-meter hurdles. He ran a personal best of 14.35 seconds. Wheeler, who posted a time of 14.26 seconds in the qualifying round on Friday, also bested CIF Sac-Joaquin Section champion Austin Cramer, of Argonaut, for the first time this season in five races. Cramer was sixth in 14.44. In the 300 hurdle finals, the Sacramento State-bound Wheeler finished in 37.86 seconds to place sixth. He was just .16 seconds behind event winner Jarrett Gonzales, from Damien. Del Oro senior Brie Simmons qualified for the finals in the 300 hurdles, clocking a 44.10 to place ninth. Fairfield standout Daje Pugh won the state title in the 300 hurdles. Simmons missed the finals in her other two events ? the 100 hurdles and the 100-meter dash. In the girls pole vault, Del Oro freshman Melissa Maneatis also cleared 11-3 before missing on three attempts and settling for 19th. Del Oro?s 4x400 relay squad of Wheeler, Blake Covey, Austin Smith and Johnathon Tuttle placed fifth in its preliminary heat on Friday and missed Saturday?s final. The Eagles finished in 3:20.85. The Del Oro girls 4x400 relay team ? Amy Heyn, Dominique Tristant, Sydney Prioette and Kristen Schumacher - ran a 4:05:55 to place seventh in their 4x400 heat.
