Looking for a Yankee Doodle Dandy of a good time? Homeland is a trio of free concerts to be held July 1-3 at the Auburn Library Garden Theater. “We want a place for people to be able to bring their lawn chairs and their picnic baskets and listen to some great music,” said Pamela Marich, one of the event coordinators. A Gift of the Heart, the Placer Pops Chorale and Auburn Grace Community Church sponsor this concert series, which is in its second year. “We’re doing a patriotic concert to honor our servicemen and to help people feel a little more patriotic about their country,”?Marich said. Concertgoers can expect to hear all sorts of patriotic tunes such as “America the Beautiful”?and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The program is meant to be casual and family friendly, involving about 90 minutes of music, plus an intermission. “I think people are hungry for support of their country, and patriotism, and a ‘God bless the USA’ feeling,” Marich said. Lorin Miller is music pastor at Auburn Grace Fellowship and director of Placer Pops Chorale, previously known as Sierra Community Chorus. He and Marich founded A?Gift of the Heart, a charitable organization meant to promote arts in the community and provide opportunities for local talent. “We try to keep the atmosphere positive and clean,”?Marich said. Miller said everyone hopes to build on last year’s successful event by adding a third concert. “For us it was like a little slice of Americana — kids were playing, families were sitting together,” he said of the inaugural Homeland concerts of 2010. The Homeland concerts are sure to appeal to listeners of all ages. “It’s music that we associate with America, Americana,”?he said. “It gets to my heart. It makes me feel encouraged and it makes me feel proud. It makes me hopeful.” Miller said there’s truly no reason not to attend one of next weekend’s concerts. “We still live in a great country and it’s great to be reminded of that,”?he said. “Where else can you get good quality music for free? Come see a slice of America we’ve forgotten.” Reach Loryll Nicolaisen at __________ In the Know What: Homeland, a trio of free concerts featuring patriotic music When: 7 p.m. July 1-3 Where: Auburn Library Garden Theater, 350 Nevada St. Cost Free Info:, (530) 823-8330
