Texas-sized signing for Del Oro's Monroe
While many of the nation's top high school football players will be signing their national letters of intent to play college football in front of family, friends and fellow students this Wednesday, standout Del Oro running back Brandon Monroe will be doing his signing halfway across the United States.
Because Monroe is one of three players from California selected to play in Wednesday’s International Bowl in Austin, Texas featuring the under-18 U.S. National Team vs. Canada, a special signing session from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. is set for participating players at the Renaissance Austin Hotel.
“It’s going to be strange doing the signing back there but my parents and coach Taylor will be there,” said Monroe who has verbally committed to play at San Jose State next season.
“It’s been pretty exciting to be selected to play with guys from across the country,” said Monroe. “Right now I’m pretty busy and I’m trying to balance everything out.”
Monroe arrived in Texas last Saturday to begin practice preparations for the game which is one of three All-Star classics. Also scheduled is an under-19 game and an under-16 game.
In 2012, despite missing three games due to injury, Monroe finished this past season with 1,545 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns. Monroe ended his career at Del Oro by rushing for 3,456 yards and scoring 52 touchdowns. He was tagged for his efforts as the Sacramento Metro area’s Offensive Player of the Year.
Monroe’s USA squad will be coached by Chris Metzger of Pinehurst High School in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The team will consist of 40 of the top high school football players from around the United States. Team USA is not an all-star team, rather it is a national team program composed of the best individuals on a basis of talent and character.
"This is a real honor," said Monroe. I'm really looking forward to it."
The game will be streamed on youtube starting at 5:30 PST. The link is www.youtube.com/usafootballtv.
