It’s generally referred to as “one of them racing deals,” and All American Speedway had one Saturday night on its NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program.

Modified frontrunners Scott Winters and Jason Philpot had a skirmish while battling for the checkered flag on the 35th and final lap of the Modified main event, and teenager Chase Grigsby earned his first victory as a result.

Philpot and Winters took turns running 1-2 throughout the main until Philpot crashed on the white-flag lap. Meanwhile, Grigsby, 16, started sixth in the 16-car field and was running third when the wreck occurred.

Speedway manager Jeff Munro said Monday that fault was shared by Winters and Philpot. Winters was penalized and sent back to seventh place, the final car on the lead lap. Philpot was moved back to 10th place.

As for Grigsby …

“Good for him for staying out of all the mess,” Munro said.

Winters set the pace in qualifying with a lap at 13.985 seconds around the one-third-mile paved oval. He also won the dash.

Late Model — Travis Milburn capped a sweep by beating Matt Scott to the checkered flag by .253 of a second in the 75-lap main event.

Milburn was the No. 1 qualifier at 13.83 and the dash winner. He and Scott passed Ron Chunn for the lead on lap 43.

Street Stock — Mickey Owens took the lead from Matt Camp on lap five of the 35-lap feature and beat Richard Poppert Jr. and a 19-car field by 1.52 seconds. Owens also was the top qualifier at 14.914.

Kevin Owens and Dave Sciarroni won heats, and Mel Wilson won the dash.

Bomber — Top qualifier David Thompson bested a 17-car field in the 35-lap main.

Eric Bocksberger led 26 of the first 27 laps before Thompson passed him.
Bocksberger also won a heat. Jarred Beddow won the dash and the other heat.

Legends of the Pacific — Tony Mangini was declared the winner in a feature that was halted after 31 laps.

The race went to a red flag after a crash involving top qualifier James Bickford (15.41) and dash winner Luis Tyrrell with Frankie Marks also being collected.

Jeremy Doss, Forrest Kuecker and Joe Leduc won the heats.
