SureWest downed the City of Roseville 14-6 in the championship game of the Coed Softball event, held on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Mahany Park in Roseville, according to Jim Crosthwaite of South Placer Corporate Games. The winners jumped out in front 10-2 after two innings and were never headed. The victory allowed the winners to creep closer to the City of Roseville in the Top Gold Division of the competition. Mark Wise of SureWest went 4x4 in the championship game and finished with a .642 average with a homer, triple and seven RBI in his three games. Josie Smith and Chris Thomas each added three to the winning total. For City of Roseville, Phil McAvoy, who went 9x10 in the tourney, went 3x4 in the finale and both Kevin Melin and Brenda Brunnel contributed a pair of hits. Basic Urban Kitchen claimed 3rd place by edging Williams+Paddon 9-8, erasing a 8-6 deficit with 3 runs in their final at bat. Tim Casey went 3x3 for the winners. Darci Reed also made several diving (!?) stops and Cory Tapia provided a non-stop comedic routine that rivaled the great Henny Youngman. Basic took over the lead in the Silver Division with their finish. For Williams+Paddon, who moved into 2nd place in the Silver Division, Sharon Strickland went 3x3 and both Stu Grinstain and Will Sandusky each added a pair of hits and two RBI. The next events include categories of Bowling, Miniature, Golf, Iron Chef BBQ and Golf, when the competition passes the midway point.
