Fernandez, Granger Head Girls Fast Pitch Clinic Three-time Olympic gold medalist Lisa Fernandez will hold a Gold Medal Youth Softball Camp and coach’s clinic from Friday through Sunday, Aug. 26 to 28, at Foskett Park, in Lincoln. The coach’s clinic will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Aug. 26, and the youth camp will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 27 and 28. Instructors include Fernandez, fellow U.S. Olympic pitcher Michele Granger, now the softball coach at Granite Bay High School, U.S. Olympic catcher Jenny Topping, national team member and Roseville native Lyndsey Klein, and University of the Pacific coach Brian Kolze. The camp is open to girls of all skill levels from the ages of 8 to 18 and includes instruction in pitching, catching, hitting, fielding, base running and agility. The camp cost is $150 if pre-registered by Aug. 15; and $200 on the day of the camp. The coach’s clinic costs $50 and will include hitting and fielding mechanics, game strategy, practice time and a question and answer session. Del Oro taking football seat reservations Del Oro High is now accepting seat reservations for the upcoming 2011 football season. The program is part of a format that began in 2008 to help the school offset the increased cost of athletics at the school. The seating is good for all of Del Oro’s six regular season home games. Benefit Golf Tourney A golf tournament to benefit Loomis Boy Scouts of America Troop 12 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Lincoln Hills golf club. A barbecue dinner follows at the Loomis Memorial Hall. Early bird prices, booked by Aug. 22, are $80 per person and $400 for a sponsorship that includes golf and dinner for four. Dinner only is $15 for adults and $8 for children under 12. The event is sponsored by the Loomis Lions and American Legion Post 775. Gelfand Cure for Leukemia golf is Aug. 26 The second Gary Gelfand Cure for Leukemia Classic golf tournament is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln. Gelfand, a longtime Sacramento-area sports broadcaster, is battling acute myelogenous leukemia. He was part of the “Good Day Sacramento” team and hosted “The Sports Show” and “Good Evening Sacramento.” The tournament costs $150 per player and $600 for a foursome. Sierra Women’s Golf Fundraiser The Sierra College Women’s Golf Team hosts its annual tournament fundraiser at Whitney Oaks Golf Club on Aug. 19. The tournament is an 18-hole, four-ball scramble. Prizes will be awarded. Check-in begins at 7 a.m.; shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $100 per player and includes range balls, cart, and a box lunch.Tee-sign sponsorships are $100 (non golfer), or $500 for a team of four golfers.
