The Five Cities girls 16 and under softball all-star team is having a banner summer run. Under the guidance of coaches Cindy York, Gregg Roberts and Beth Turner, the local fast pitch standouts won another tournament last weekend, this time coming home with the championship trophy of the Nor Cal Invitational held in Elk Grove. Earlier this summer the Five Cities squad finished second in an All-Star tourney in Cordova and also captured the Greater Sacramento Softball Association Metro Tournament that qualified the team for the National 16 and under B Nationals slated next month for Prescott, Arizona. However, according to York, the Five Cities All-Stars won’t be making the trip to Arizona. “It was just going to be too expensive,” said York. “It was going to cost between $25,000 and $30,000 and being held the first week of August was just going to be a bit too much.” Despite putting the national bid on the backburner, York noted that the Five Cities 16 and unders have played great this summer. “The girls did a terrific job,” said York. “They’re having fun and played just great.” Trio Headed To Tennessee Three girls from the Loomis area are headed to Johnson City, Tenneesee with MVP Softball from Sacramento, a girls 10 and under Class A competitive ASA traveling team. The team qualified for the ASA Nationals July 28 to Aug. 7 by finishing second in the GSSA Metro qualifying tournament. The girls from Loomis on the squad are Natalie Miller, Nicole Zuvela and Lillian Whittey. The rest of the squad is comprised of girls from Rocklin, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights and Sacramento. Like all teams traveling to far away places for national competition, fundraising is necessary. Anyone that would like to donate to help the Loomis trio make the trip can do so by contacting Scott Miller at 276-1405 or at Add Fundraiser Speaking of fundraisers, a dinner and golf event to benefit the new Del Oro High School pool will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27. Golf will be held at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club and will be followed by a silent auction and dinner at the Blue Goose, in Loomis. Cost to golf and dine is $100 per person. Dinner only is $35 per person or $60 per couple. Table sponsorship for 10 is $500. Silent auction contributions are also being accepted. Both events are Del Oro senior projects.
