Soroptimist International of Loomis Basin is offering several awards and scholarships to local women. Presentations will be made in February for the Women’s Opportunity Award, Violet Richardson Award and Soroptimist Ruby Award. Deadlines for application vary from early December to February. For more information and applications, contact Jennifer Knisley at 719-1132. Women’s Opportunity Awards aid mature women who must enter or return to the job market in order to support themselves and their family. These women need additional skills, training and education to upgrade their employment status. Candidates should be heads of households completing undergraduate programs or entering vocational or technical training programs. Competition begins at the club level, which has a $1,000 award, and recipients are eligible for additional awards at other levels of the organization. Applications are due Dec. 15. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes and honors young women between the ages of 14 and 17 who make the community and world a better place through volunteerism. Volunteer efforts can include fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty, among others. Volunteer actions that benefit women and girls are of particular interest. The recipient receives a $500 award, and she can choose a charity for an additional $500 award. The deadline to apply for this award is Dec. 1. The Soroptmist Ruby Award for Women Helping Women goes to those who are improving the lives of other women or girls through their professional or personal activities. These women have identified and focused on a need in their communities, which has significantly contributed to the improvement of women and girls’ lives. Examples of the type of work honored include spearheading an effort to open a domestic violence shelter, starting a mentoring program for at-risk girls, or lobbying companies to provide on-site childcare. Apply by Feb. 1, 2010.
