Soccer team keeps playoff hopes alive

The Del Oro Lady Eagles are taking their bid to qualify for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II soccer playoffs right down to the wire. Thanks to a pair of huge Sierra Foothill League wins last week, Del Oro remained in playoff contention heading into this week’s final slate of SFL matches. However, two things must have happened on Wednesday if the Lady Eagles were to put themselves in line for a postseason berth. First, Del Oro would have had to take care of business by winning in a regular season finale road match at Woodcreek. Secondly, Del Oro needs help in the form of Roseville either defeating or tying Granite Bay. Del Oro squared its SFL record at 4-4 last week by blanking Granite Bay, 2-0, on Wednesday and then coming back under the light on Friday to hand Roseville a 1-0 setback. The loss left Granite Bay a half-match ahead of Del Oro at 4-3-1. In the win over Granite Bay, the Lady Eagles received goals from Lauren Gollnick and Miranda Bailey and another outstanding match from keeper Casey Bell. The Roseville match proved to be a defensive struggle as the two teams played a scoreless first half before Del Oro’s Rachel Sloss scored what proved to be the match winning goal in the second half. In the assist department, Jessica Hinskin had one in the Granite Bay win while Jordan McDaniel assisted on Sloss’ tally in the Roseville match. Bell also had four saves against the Tigers. The top three teams from the SFL will qualify for the Div. II playoffs which will begin at home sites on May 12. Rocklin (6-2-1) and Roseville (6-2-1) have already earned playoff berths. ~ Staff report
