Smotherman advances at Junior Amateur

Austin Smotherman made quick work of his first match at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship on Wednesday in Bremerton,Wash. Now the Del Oro High junior faces what could be the biggest match of his career. Smotherman cruised past Sulman Raza of Eugene, Ore. to set up a showdown with Beau Hossler of Mission Viejo today. Hossler was the medalist in the stroke play portion of the tournament and is the top seed in the 64-person match play event. Smotherman is seeded 33rd. On Wednesday, Smotherman needed just 13 holes to oust Raza as he went up six strokes with five to play. He had the largest margin of victory out of the 32 first-round matches played. Hossler defeated Miller Capps of Denver, N.C. 3 and 2. Smotherman and Hossler will tee off at 7:30 a.m. today.
