Sierra Plays At American River For Title Saturday
A piece of the Valley Conference football championship will be on the line Saturday afternoon when Sierra College’s Wolverines close their regular season by playing at American River. Kickoff in Beaver Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
Both Sierra and American River will take identical 3-1 conference records with them into the game with the winner securing at least a share of the conference title. Fresno City, also 3-1, hosts College of Sequoias, with a chance to also gain a piece of the crown.
“It’s a big game,” said Sierra coach Jeff Tisdel. “Anytime you’re playing your last game for the conference title, it’s huge.”
Sierra will be entering the game at American River (7-2, 3-1) coming off an emotional 45-38 double overtime win over previous co-leading San Joaquin Delta last Saturday in Rocklin.
Demarcus Jones, who rushed 30 times for 115 yards, scored a pair of touchdowns in overtime, the second on an 11-yard run for the winning points.
Zach Starnes, a freshman defensive back out of Woodland, got the scoring rolling for Sierra (5-4, 3-1) in the opening quarter when he returned a Delta interception 74 yards for a touchdown.
Led by Jordan Harter (Ponderosa), Luke Arciniega, Willie Gresham (Rosevilel) and Chris Hickson, the Wolverines recorded eight sacks in the win.
