Sheriff’s warn of law enforcement scheme

-A +A
Placer County Sheriff’s detectives are warning residents of a fraud scheme operating under the name of the “Department of Law and Investigations.” In this scheme, victims receive phone messages or calls from people stating they are from the “Department of Law and Investigations” in Auburn. They are given a name for their “agent” and told to call back. If the victims call back, they are informed that because of their failure to pay back a debt, a civil warrant has been issued and they must immediately pay the department. The operation is not associated with law enforcement and the phone bank does not appear to be in the Auburn area. Sheriff’s officials remind residents to be cautious about giving out personal information over the phone. Legitimate law enforcement organizations will be able to provide methods to authenticate the phone call and will not hesitate to give out a physical address. ~ Staff report
