Senior Spotlight: John Jordan
Way smoothed for wheelchair-bound
Making the school’s Bonner gymnasium more accessible to the handicapped was important enough for Del Oro High School student John Jordan that he decided to make it his senior project. Jordan explained that the school was compliant with the number of spaces for the handicapped in comparison to the number of parking spaces available. However, during Christmas break he became aware that there was a need for wheelchair and walker accessibility at the gym when it became difficult to push the wheelchair that his 91-year-old aunt uses closer to the gym so that she could watch his brother’s basketball game. “This task was a great learning experience,” said Jordan, who was helped in the project by a number of community members, as well as his mentor, Robert Martinez of Creative Concrete. “Hopefully, the accessibility to the gym will make life a little easier for all those that need it,” John said.
