Name: George Schafer Age: 17 School: Del Oro High School College/career goals: Sacramento State and aspiring to be a professional musician. Senior project description: Organized a jazz combo group and performed in recent Del Oro Band Winter Concert. It was George’s goal to bring back the jazz band that was played during his freshmen and sophomore year. On Dec. 16, Del Oro High School Band held its winter concert to show off the hard work of all the students enrolled in the program. Senior George Schafer, one of the students in the band, organized a small jazz group that was able to perform three jazz pieces during the winter concert. “I choose this project because I love music a lot, and I’ve always liked jazz music and I wanted to have the opportunity someday to perform jazz pieces in front of an audience,” he said. For Schafer’s senior project he was required to find students interested in being apart of a jazz group and schedule practice sessions to work different pieces. “For me the biggest challenge is the overall organization and making of it all. Early on, getting everything together was a very long and slow process. Through it all I’ve learned that you have to be prepared for everything that comes your way and make the best of what you have,” he said. Senior Erin McGrath, who was able to see the performance, said she felt George and his jazz group did an excellent job in their performance. "I thought they did a really great job and they are all exceptional musicians. I like how they performed songs that George had composed himself and they all seemed to work well together. I can't wait to see what they have for the next performance," she said. Currently, George is organizing another performance for the spring term and hopes to play six to seven tunes, including the ones performed at the winter concert. George, a young musician, appears to have a bright future ahead of him who hopes that through hard work and dedication he will accomplish his goal of becoming a professional musician.
