A man who accidentally shot himself Thursday while riding as a passenger on Interstate-80 has been identified as 49-year-old David Willoughby of Willits, Calif. Willoughby and a friend were on their way to Nevada for a hunting trip when Willoughby accidentally shot himself through the left hand and groin, and was later transported to Sutter Roseville Hospital, according to a press release from the Auburn Police Department. Sgt. Dale Hutchins of the Auburn Police Department emphasized that the incident is still under investigation. “Whenever someone gets shot, whether accidental or intentional, there is an investigation,” Hutchins said. In response to the type of weapon taken from the truck involved in the incident, Hutchins admitted the gun’s legality is in question. “It was an AR-15 style weapon (the M-16 used in the US military is a variant of the AR-15) taken from the truck,” Hutchins said. “We are working with the Department of Justice to determine if the weapon is illegal. That is a huge gray area. There are a range of issues which will determine if the gun is an illegal assault rifle or not.” The gun in question is not the one accidentally discharged. “If this was the gun used, the guy would probably not be around anymore,” said officer Chris Forman also of the Auburn Police Department. “The gun used was a 9mm,” Forman said.
