Austin Dunn scored a goal on a two-on-one breakaway in the final two minutes to lift the Placer High boys soccer team to a 2-1 win over Casa Roble at Railhead Park Monday, the fourth straight victory for the Hillmen (6-1-2). The Rams scored in the 10th minute before Mitchell Maddox tied the score on a follow off the left goal post in the 25th minute. “It was a good struggle back and forth, a good physical game,” Placer head coach Mark Miller said. Michael Bertolone assisted Dunn’s goal. Placer goalkeeper Nigel Pell, sweeper Nick Mitchell and midfielder Dylan Day all played stellar games. The Hillmen travel to Woodland to take on Pioneer Friday afternoon in their final tune-up before opening Pioneer Valley League play at home against Colfax next Monday. VOLLEYBALL GRANITE BAY — Del Oro had game point twice in the fifth game at Granite Bay but couldn’t capitalize, falling to the Grizzlies in an exciting Sierra Foothill League opener Monday night. Granite Bay won 25-13, 25-13, 16-25, 21-25, 17-15, holding off a late rally by the Golden Eagles. Jamie Russell had 12 kills, while Aly Duffin added eight kills and five blocks. Kate Kessler had 12 digs and Emily Hentschke added 11. Jess Lehner had 27 assists for Del Oro, which fell to 5-6 overall and will play in a tournament at Sheldon High Saturday. The Eagles fell to the Grizzlies in the junior varsity game, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8 to fall to 3-1 overall. Del Oro beat Granite Bay in the freshmen game, 25-20, 25-12 to improve to 4-0 on the year. Foresthill 3, Sierra Christian 0 at Rocklin — Senior middle blocker Hannah Clyde recorded 14 service aces and four kills, both team highs, as the Wildfires beat the Bears 25-16, 25-13, 25-20. Freshman middle blocker Anna Steever added five aces for Foresthill (2-4, 2-0 Central Valley Christian League), which beat Sierra Christian for the second time in five days. FOOTBALL The Placer Jr. Hillmen midget football team fell to the Granite Bay Jr. Grizzlies Saturday, 42-20. In Placer’s third game of the season, Mike Robinson ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns while Jordan Smith rushed for 72 yards and a score. Jacob Peek anchored the defensive effort with seven tackles, one sack and one blocked extra point. Casey Yunk intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards, almost scoring a touchdown. Jordan Smith and Nate Ralls had eight tackles apiece for the Hillmen. Placer beat the Nevada Union Jr. Miners 56-38 on Sept. 5 in the team’s first Friday night under the lights. The offense rolled up nearly 500 ground yards. Robinson rushed for 386 yards and scored an equally impressive seven touchdowns. Ralls and Suvercrop each had 10 tackles in the victory. Placer hosts the Del Oro Jr. Golden Eagles Saturday at 5 p.m.
