Placer, Del Oro dominate league tourneys

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Hillmen, Eagles each qualify at least 12 individuals for upcoming divisional meets

Dalton Richardson and Joe Thornton each won their weight classes Thursday at the Pioneer Valley League Wrestling Championships in Rocklin, helping Placer High win the tournament for the second straight season.
Richardson, a senior, won at 125 pounds while Thornton, a junior, placed first at 140 in the tournament at Whitney High. The two led a contingent of 12 Hillmen who qualified for next week’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV tournament in Manteca by placing among the top four in their weight classes.
“This is the most we’ve had go to divisions in a while,” Hillmen assistant coach Phil Cox said.
Placer, which swept all six of its PVL dual meets during the regular season, had four seniors earn second-place finishes — Mitchell Maddox (130 pounds), Aaron Maddox (135), Carl Pavich (145) and Jake Styler (heavyweight). Also taking the runner-up spot in their weight classes were juniors Andrew Naleway (119) and Steven Cox.
Junior Mark Looney (152), sophomore Zach Uvalle (112) and freshman Michael Robinson (171) each took third in their respective weight classes, while freshman Justin Mason placed fourth at 103.
In the team standings, Placer was the only team to break 200 points, scoring 212 to finish 40 ahead of second-place Lincoln.
Hillmen head coach Jess Stiff was named the PVL’s Coach of the Year for the second straight season after the tournament.
Eight Bear River wrestlers earned trips to the divisional tournament. Senior Justin Chirigotis (145 pounds) and sophomores Kyle Anderson (103), Jory Gemignani (112) and Nick Sauers (125) all placed second in their respective weight classes. Placing third in their weight classes were juniors Juan Gudino (119) and Braden Scinto (189) and sophomores Harley Sauers (135) and Michael Merrill (215).
Sophomore Jordan Hallied was fourth at 130 for the Bruins.
Colfax had three wrestlers qualify for the divisional tournament. Junior Vinny Corralejo placed second at 152 pounds, while senior Joe Petersen took third at 145. Sophomore Kenny Mathe also qualified, placing fourth at 215.
In junior varsity action, Placer had a slew of wrestlers earn league titles. Juniors Carter Kendall and Noah Stedman won at 140 and 171, respectively. Also claiming championships were freshmen Eric Burton (125), Brenden Packheiser (130), Mason Lenover (160) and Brandin Rinaldo (189).

Blomgren, Stafford win SFL titles
Seniors Dylan Blomgren and Jesse Stafford each pinned down Sierra Foothill League titles at Thursday’s championship tournament at Nevada Union.
Blomgren won at 135 pounds, while Stafford was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler by SFL coaches after winning the 152-pound title. Both Blomgren and Stafford won their finals by major decision.
The two will lead a contingent of 13 Golden Eagles at next week’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division III tournament in El Dorado Hills. Wrestlers had to place at least fourth at Thursday’s meet to qualify.
Placing second in their weight classes for Del Oro were seniors Eddie Love (189 pounds) and Shane Plummer and juniors Danny Jacoshenk (119) and Kevin Burrage (140). Taking thirds were junior s Foster Fretland (145) and Jake Uhler (171) and freshmen Brendan Montoya (112) and Johnny Zieour (103).
Earning fourth-place finishes were junior Jimmy Jacoshenk (125) and sophomore Kevin Love (160). Sophomore 130-pounder Austin Branum, who is rehabbing a knee injury, also took fourth after defaulting in his third-place match.
