After posting respective wins over Rocklin to open Sierra Foothill League play last week, both the Del Oro girls and boys varsity basketball teams competed in Saturday’s Common Good Classic showcase hosted at Antelope High School. But in match-ups against Oak Ridge, both the Lady Eagles and Eagles took it on the chin in the games which annually pair some of the top teams in the Sacramento area. In the opener, Del Oro’s girls suffered one of their poorest offensive outputs of the season in a 52-32 setback to the Lady Trojans. Coach Mike Takayama’s girls scored just three points over the final eight minutes and just 10 in the second half after going into halftime tied with their El Dorado Hills foes, 22-22. Leading Del Oro’s scoring was Brianna Ruiz with 11 points; Followed by Mia Maglinte with eight markers and Jessica Hinsken with five. In the DO-Oak Ridge boys game, Del Oro did a good defensive job on Bryce Scott, one of the Sacramento area’s scoring leaders, but fell for naught in a 57-46 defeat. Averaging nearly 25 points a game, Scott was limited to just six points, but the Eagles fell behind 32-22 by halftime and 48-31 after three quarters, before the Black and Gold made a mini-run over the last stanza. Del Oro was paced by Jordan Broyles, Ryan Takayama and Alan Kidwell, all with seven points each. ~ Staff report
