Standout Del Oro running back Brandon Monroe has given San Jose State a verbal commitment to play football for the Spartans in 2013. Monroe, who last week was named to Max Preps’ pre-season all-Northern California football team, confirmed that he told San Jose State head coach Mike MacIntyre on Monday that he would accept San Jose State’s scholarship offer. Monroe also had scholarship offers from Fresno State and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He may also play linebacker and/or safety in college. Monroe, who rushed for 1,622 yards and scored 22 touchdowns as a junior last season, became attracted to San Jose State because of its animation graphic design program, which he plans to major in. Monroe will follow ex-Golden Eagles Ryan Otten, who is a senior tight end this season at San Jose State, and Ryno Gonzalez, who played linebacker for the Spartans 2007-2010. San Jose State is playing its final season in the Western Athletic Conference this year. In 2013, the Spartans will join the Mountain West Conference, which consists of Fresno State, Nevada, Hawaii, Utah State, UNLV, Wyoming, New Mexico and Air Force.
