“It’s so much fun. It’s a great way to express yourself and get exercise,” said dance teacher Jessica “Jay” Claycomb. Claycomb is one of three new dance instructors who will be offering a variety of classes at McLaughlin Studios Music & Dance Education Facility. Ballet, jazz, hip hop, theater dance and a combination swing, ballroom and Latin dance class are just some of the choices. McLaughlin Studios, owned by Nancie and Greg McLaughlin, has provided music lessons to local adults and children for 16 years and recently added the dance classes. “Dance and music lessons taken together give children a deeper understanding of the arts,” Nancie McLaughlin said. “We found that a lot of our music students were also taking dance, so now they can take both classes in one place,” she added. According to Claycomb, the most sought-after course is the combination ballroom class, which can be taken by couples looking to improve their dance skills. “You don’t have to have a partner to join the class, and you don’t need any experience,” Claycomb said. Two other instructors, Kathy Bailey who teaches at Sierra College, and Julia Rath, an award-winning ballroom dancer, also will lead classes. Classes are available for a variety of age groups including younger children. Claycomb said the studio might add a dance class for preschoolers in the morning. Monthly fees for the classes are $60 for a one-hour class and $55 for a 45-minute class. Private lessons are also available. Classes are held once a week. Registration is currently underway for March classes. For more information call the studio at 652-6377 or visit their Web site at
