The Loomis Union School District has seated a new board member and approved a budget that deficit spends by almost half a million dollars. Jeanne Duvall, of Loomis, was elected by board members to fill the seat of trustee Jack Day, who recently retired from the school board. Duvall is in construction management and has two sons who attended Franklin Elementary School. The trustees approved a $14.8 million budget at their June 17 meeting that includes $431,921 taken from the district’s reserves and furlough days for all staff. The budget includes an additional $100,000 in state cuts for the up-coming school year, said Jay Stewart, assistant superintendent. “The state budget was supposed to be benign as far as cuts to schools, but after working the numbers it comes out as more cuts for schools,” Stewart said. The district still has $542,236 in reserves or 3.6 percent of the budget. The state mandates that school districts maintain a minimum of three percent in reserves that can be used in case of an emergency, but must be replaced in three years. During budget discussion, school board members acknowledged sacrifices made by teachers, staff and administrators that allowed the district to keep all programs and staff. “Everyone came together and took reductions. They took a hit to keep it good for our kids,” said Jim Foster, board president, of the unpaid furlough days that teachers, staff and administrators agreed to. Board member Mike Edwards said, “Our staff pulled together and made a sacrifice so our kids could have these great programs.” The school board approved the calendar and dates for staff furloughs days for the upcoming school year. The first day of school will be Thursday, Aug. 19. The school year ends on Thursday, June 9, 2011. All schools and the district office will be closed on Oct. 7 and 8, Nov. 12, April 25 and May 27. --------------------------------- LOMIS UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT 2010-11 Budget: $14,824,675 Estimated income: $14,392,754 Reserves used: $431,921 Remaining reserves: $542,236 or 3.6 percent Source: Loomis Union School District
