If you’re a high school football team practicing on Thanksgiving Day, good things are happening with your season. A Turkey Day workout means that the team has reached the Final Four of the playoff round. Such is the case for Casey Taylor and his Del Oro Golden Eagles as they will fine-tune their game plan today for Friday’s big CIF Sac-Joaquin Section semi-final round. The Eagles take on the Whitney Wildcats, of Rocklin, at home. Game time is 7 p.m., with the winner receiving a trip to the CIF Div. III championship game either next Friday or Saturday against the Oakdale-Casa Roble survivor. The Golden Eagles (11-1), need to heed these unwritten playoff rules. The preliminaries are over. Now the yards start to come a little bit tougher. The passes start getting a little harder to hang on to. The tackling must be sure and crisp. Coach decision-making becomes a little more critical. Self-inflicted wounds can be devastating. Footing on a wet field can be treacherous. Every penalty flag can change a season. The four remaining Div. III teams have all reached a point of no return. Playoff ticket prices for Friday’s game are $9 for adults and $5 for students. Water Polo Honors Five Del Oro water polo players have been tabbed as Academic All-Americans for 2010-2011. Del Oro All-American honors went to Daniel Hawley, Jake Triplett and Courtney Weddle. Academic All American honors went to Thor Kamphefner and Katelynn Thompson. This is the fifth year of the All-American Program that honors students for excellence, not just in the pool, but in the classroom. Student-athletes had to complete the 10th, 11th or 12th grade in Spring of 2011 and participate in a USA Water Polo National Championship event to be eligible. Each student-athlete had to have at least a 3.6 grade point average for the current school year with outstanding achievement going to those with a 4.0 GPA. Hoops ready To Tip Off While football is still rolling at Del Oro, the schools girls and boys basketball teams are getting ready to get their season’s going. Both Del Oro teams will be in action on Monday in CIF Foundation Games at Colfax. Mike Takayama’s girls team will tip off against Colfax at 6 p.m. followed by Geoff Broyles’ boys squad taking on the Falcons at 7:30. All gate funds raised by the games go to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section for scholarships that are awarded to graduating seniors. Honors For Mitnick Former Del Oro soccer player Kolby Mitnick was honored at Dominican University in San Rafael by being named to the all-Cal Pac men’s soccer team for 2011. Mitnick, a Business Administration major from Newcastle, tied for most assists on the team this season along with scoring two goals including the game-winner in overtime, against Hawaii-Hilo. Mitnick started all 18 games as a freshman for the Penguins. “Kolby had a strong year and played well,” said Dominican coach Jon Delano said. “Kolby can create an opportunity whenever he wants. I'm looking forward to what is to come from him in the future.”
