Football must be just around the corner when pre-season all-CIF Sac-Joaquin Section teams are starting to be released. Last week ESPN RISE-Student Sports handed out its pre-season selections and quite a few area athletes made the squad’s first and second teams. Locally, Del Oro High School’s Alex Bertrando, a senior linebacker, was a first team pre-season selection on defense. The 6-foot-3-inch, 205-pound Bertrando also doubles as a tight end and last year snagged 29 passes for 373 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Other area players earning pre-season first team mentions included Whitney quarterback Jake Rodrigues, Whitney tight end Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick and Granite Bay offensive lineman Gavin Andrews, who checks in at 6 foot 6 inches, 230 pounds. Earning second team nods were Roseville running back Casey Lambert, Granite Bay quarterback Brendan Kenny and Whitney wide receiver Cory Palin. It all starts for Del Oro when the Golden Eagles host Spanish Springs of Reno in the 2011 season opener on Aug. 26. Lees Aids Top Finish The Northern California Volleyball Club 16-1 Black team, comprised of players from the greater Sacramento area, lost only one match and placed second in the recent national division at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships, held in Atlanta. The team, coached by Oak Ridge varsity girls’ volleyball coach Becky Potter and assisted by John Grix, from Rio Americano, featured top players from the area, including Del Oro’s Morgan Lees. Other foothills area players on the squad included Granite Bay’s Taylor Nelson and Maddy Deters; Placer’s Kirstin Schauble; Bear River’s Sara Schell; and Rocklin’s Sara Sheehy. Playing against 47 teams in the national division, NCVC 16-1 Black won all their matches until the championship round. With the game tied at 13, and both teams two points from victory, NCVC 16-1 Black lost the next two points and lost the match. Sierra Gridders Reunite There will be an informal reunion of Sierra College football players, coaches, and those associated with the team from 1980-1983 on Saturday August 13th in Grass Valley at the Nevada County Fairgrounds main concession area beginning at 6:00 p.m. There will also be a tour of the Sierra College Campus in Rocklin beginning at 2 p.m., Friday August 12.
