56th Optimist All-Star Game; Small School Classic Set Saturday At Del Oro

A new look Sacramento Optimist All-Star Football Game – the first after a one-year hiatus – is slated for Saturday afternoon at Del Oro High School in Loomis.

The 56th annual event, long contested at either Hughes Stadium or American River College in Sacramento over the years, will be a North versus South all-stars match-up that will bring together some of the top senior players in the Sacramento metro area.

“It should be a good game,” said Del Oro coach Casey Taylor who is assisting Grant’s Mike Alberghini with the North All-Stars. “We got commitments this year from a group of outstanding players. We’re excited."

Kickoff in Golden Eagle Stadium is set for 12 noon on Saturday. Adult tickets are $10 and will be on sale at the gate. Proceeds from the event go to the Sacramento Optimist Club’s Camp Ross Relles, a summer camp in Nevada County that provides recreational opportunities for children with special needs.

One unique side note for this year’s game is the playing of several players who have already made verbal commitments to colleges to play football.

In recent years, colleges frowned somewhat, because of the chance of injury, on committed players participating in summer all-star games. However, because players can’t sign letters of intent until February, colleges really have no say in player participation.

Players making verbal commitments on the North roster include defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes of Placer (USC), linebacker Tanner Vallejo of Nevada Union (Boise State), running back Brandon Monroe of Del Oro (San Jose State) and defensive end Stone Sander of Placer (Sacramento State).

Commits on the South team, which will be coached by Butch Cattolico of Pleasant Grove, Michael Johnson of Franklin and John Heffernan of Burbank, include running back Isaiah Saunders of Pleasant Grove (Idaho) and defensive tackle Nick Terry of Pleasant Grove (Boise State).

Other notable area players include quarterback Kyle Cota of Nevada Union, defensive back Zach LaBar of Del Oro, linebacker Tyler Wharton of Del Oro and quarterback Stephen Nogosek of Woodcreek.

Two players from State CIF Bowl Div. I champion Granite Bay, Parker Doyle, an offensive lineman, and Tyler Arneson, a defensive lineman, will also participate.

Saturday’s Optimist Game will be followed by the first All-City Football Classic Classic, an all-star match-up featuring players from small school squads in the Sacramento metro area. The game, also at Del Oro, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Coaching for the North All-Stars in that game are Bear River’s Scott Savoie and Terry Logue.

Local area players on the North roster include Tony Suverkropp, Isaac Brahce, Michael Robinson and Bryan Berube of Placer, Cory Wilhelm of Colfax, Tommy Sawyer, Wes Archbold, Nathan Dickson and Patrick Miles of Foresthill and Cody Heard, Jerry Fuhrman, Tevyn Kimble, Zach Winter and Dillon Smith of Bear River.
