Del Oro High School’s girls varsity volleyball team had bounced through an up-and-down preseason schedule – until last weekend. Playing in the Sheldon Invitational at Elk Grove, things came together for the Lady Eagles as the Del Oro spikers cruised through six straight foes to bring home the tournament’s championship trophy. With junior outside hitter Emily Mattevi recording a team-high nine kills, Del Oro turned back Douglas High of Minden, Nev. 27-25, 27-13 in the title match. “This was by far the best match we’ve played all year,” Golden Eagles coach Stuart Kageta said. “The girls were pumped up, excited. It was a real turn-the-corner match for us.” Outside hitter Aly Duffin, a sophomore, added five kills in the title match for the Lady Eagles. Del Oro had started its title run by turning back Bear Creek of Stockton, 25-18, 25-7; Lick-Wilmerding of San Francisco, 25-14, 25-12; Monterey Trail, 25-18, 25-21; Franklin 25-17, 25-18; and Woodland 25-20, 25-20 in the semi-finals to reach the tournament final.
