The long trek up and down Highway 49 to Sonora proved fruitful once again for the Del Oro High girls basketball team last weekend. Parlaying balanced offense with a stingy defense, the Lady Eagles swept through three straight opponents to capture the championship of the Sonora Kiwanis Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. In their latest conquest, the Lady Eagles defeated Alameda, 50-33, as tourney MVP Madeline Campbell checked in with a 15 point, nine rebound and four assist effort in the title game. Belle Obert added eight points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Briana Ruiz had eight points and three assists. Ruiz and teammate Crystal Sewell were also named to the all-tournament squad. In Friday’s semifinal, Del Oro defeated Lodi, 66-24, building a 37-14 lead by halftime and never looking back. Sewell’s 13 points and seven each by Becky Duncan and Stephanie Geyer led Del Oro. Alyssa Bernauer and Taylor Donnot each added six points. In a lopsided opener, Del Oro ran past Bret Harte, 64-12. Sewell’s 13 points led the offense, while Donnot and Geyer added seven apiece. Del Oro will now face a quality early season opponent in a home game on Monday when defending Central Section Div. I championship and Southern California regional finalist Clovis West visits Loomis for a 6:30 p.m. game. Clovis West is off to a 4-0 start. “They lost some seniors from last season but they have a quality program,” said Del Oro coach Mike Takayama. “We played them this summer and they have a fine, all-around program.” ~ Staff report
