The level of competition in the Platinum Division of last week’s West Coast Jamboree was just what Del Oro coach Mike Takayama ordered up for his Lady Eagles girls basketball team. Undefeated upon entering the toughest 16-team division of the 126 team tournament that is played at several different sites around the East Bay, the Lady Eagles returned home with a 2-2 record and a 7th place finish. After defeating Div. I Deer Valley of Antioch, 68-49, in their opening game, the Lady Eagles were handed back-to-back defeats by Texas power Georgetown and by Bay Area toughie Bishop O’Dowd. But last Thursday, the Lady Eagles made sure they left the tourney a winner when Madeline Campbell’s runner in the lane with less than 10 seconds left dropped through the hoop to give Del Oro a 54-53 win over Central Section power Hanford. Campbell finished with 16 points and landed on the all-tournament team after leading Del Oro back from a nine-point halftime deficit. Becky Duncan and Brianna Ruiz scored 10 points apiece while Belle Obert had eight points and 14 rebounds. In the 49-44 loss to O’Dowd, Del Oro rallied from a 30-20 halftime deficit to pull within two points in the second half, but Bishop O’Dowd held on. Madeline Campbell scored 20 for the Eagles while Brianna Ruiz added 11 points and Belle Obert swatted nine shots and had seven rebounds. Stephanie Geyer also pulled down eight rebounds for Del Oro. In the second round, the Lady Eagles ran into Georgetown, Texas and fell 50-41. Led by 6-foot, 4-inch wing Krystal Forthan, a LSU recruit who scored 24 points, Georgetown led from start to finish in handing Del Oro its first loss. Brianna Ruiz led the Eagles with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Madeline Campbell scored 10 and added six boards while Stephanie Geyer scored eight. Belle Obert added seven points and seven blocks. The Eagles played without senior starter Crystal Sewell, who is nursing a fractured wrist and will be out for several weeks. In their opener, Del Oro beat Deer Valley 68-49 as Campbell poured in 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Brianna Ruiz added 18 points, six steals and five assists while Stephanie Geyer scored 17 and grabbed seven rebounds. Obert contributed nine re-bounds and six blocks. ~ Staff report
