Taking a time out from Sierra Foothill League competition, the Del Oro girls water polo team parlayed an excellent weekend of matches to capture first place in the Sierra Invitational tournament, played at Sierra College over the weekend. Del Oro began tournament play on Friday with a pair of easy wins as the Lady Eagles topped Oakmont, 12-1, and Bella Vista, 9-2. The Lady Eagles then turned back Tokay, 8-3, on Saturday behind a five-goal effort from senior Courtney Weddle. Del Oro stayed on the win trail later on Saturday by defeating McClatchy in a well-played match, 6-4. Weddle scored three goals along with one each from Michael Andreatta, Ryllie Haynes and Jessica Lynch. In the championship match against Sanger, from the Fresno area, Weddle’s three goals and a pair by Andreatta were enough to power the Lady Eagles to the win. Goalie Katelynn Thompson was credited with four saves in the title match. Both Thompson and Morgan Callahan were honored as tournament outstanding players, while Weddle, Andreatta and Haynes were named to the all-tourney squad. Boys Fall To Bruins In a high-scoring Sierra Foothill League match, the Del Oro’s boys water polo team lost a 13-16 match to the Bear River Bruins. Scoring goals for Del Oro were Sam Baker (5), Connor Shellito (3), Chris McCormick (2) and Thor Kamphefner, Michael Petree and Daniel Hawley, with one goal each.
