A quick-starting Del Oro girls basketball team capitalized on an 18-3 first quarter blitz of host Oakmont last Saturday to get on their way to a 77-44 victory over the Vikings in the finals of the Oakmont Invitational Tournament.
Rebounding from absorbing their first loss of the season at the hands of St. Francis, 54-46, on the road earlier last week, the Lady Eagles bounced back in fine fashion by sweeping through three straight foes to win their second tournament of the season.
Now 6-1, Del Oro’s press and running game was in synch in the opening stanza of Saturday’s finale against Oakmont.“We were able to get a lot of easy points off their press by going over the top of it,” said Del Oro coach Mike Takayama. “I thought our defense did a good job in the first half, too.”
On their way to grabbing a big lead at the end of the opening quarter, Del Oro came up with nine steals over the first eight minutes. The Lady Eagles then kept the hot hand in the second quarter behind Mia Maglinte, Stephanie Geyer and Lauren Heyn, as Del Oro upped their lead to 41-23 by the halftime break.
The Lady Eagles then iced the contest by out-pointing the Vikings, 21-12 in the third quarter.
Leading Del Oro on offense were Maglinte with 21 points, Geyer with 18, Natalie Sohn with 10 and Lauren Heyn with seven points.
In Friday’s semi-final win, Del Oro met up with Excel Academy, a Div. V team from Stockton, and the Lady Eagles grabbed an early lead and coasted to a 64-47 win. Geyer tossed in 23 points for the Lady Eagles, while Maglinte and Sohn both added 10 points apiece and Heyn added seven.
The Lady Eagles opened the tournament on Thursday by turning back Bella Vista, 76-36. Del Oro led 38-22 at halftime and then held the Broncos to just 14 second-half points.
Maglinte’s 21 points and 14 from Heyn led Del Oro’s attack. Maglinte, Geyer and Heyn were all named to the all-tournament team.
