The Auburn Symphony is looking for some new listeners. The younger, the better. The symphony’s annual Kinderkonzert, which takes place Saturday, is a family friendly show presented as a way to introduce young listeners to the wonders of live, classical music. “It is a fantastic concert geared for families to enjoy and I would encourage them to come with the younger members of their families,” said Miccie McNee, a Kinderkonzert committee member. This year’s concert, with a theme of “Imagine,” features seven selections including Wagner’s “The Ride of the Valkyries” and the waltz from Tchaikovsky’s “The Sleeping Beauty.” McNee said the show lasts roughly an hour. “It’s very doable for little ones to enjoy,” she said. Audrey Mueller, an Auburn Symphony board member who also serves on the Kinderkonzert committee, said the annual concert is a great way to educate children about classical music in a comfortable, accessible setting. “I love to see the children enjoying the music, to see them imitating the conductor, or watching the instruments and imitating the musicians,” she said. In order to reach out to as many children as possible, the Auburn Symphony has provided free tickets and transportation to the concert for 150 children. The outreach, extended to students at Auburn, Skyridge and Rock Creek schools, is made possible by community groups including the Sugar Plump Fairies and Placer FIRST 5 Children and Families Commission, said Robert Haswell, Auburn Symphony business manager. “It’s free, the children get to go and learn about the different instruments and hear the beautiful music and learn about classical music,” said Beckie Lopez King, a teacher at Rock Creek School. Lopez King said Kinderkonzert is often the first encounter students have with classical music. “It’s fantastic to see their eyes get bigger when they hear the music, not only for the children but the parents too,” she said. __________ Auburn Symphony’s Kinderkonzert When: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday Where: Placer High School auditorium, 275 Orange St. Cost: $7 general admission Information:, (530) 823-6683 Good to know: Buy four or more tickets and save $2 per ticket.
