Join The Friends to support Loomis Library
By: Jan Chimera, Guest Columnist
Have you ever wanted to become part of an organization that helps our community, but didn't feel you had the money to join or the time to participate? Well, I have a suggestion for you. Joining the Friends of the Loomis Library won't cost you a lot of money. For the price of three iced café mochas or about the price of a small pizza, you can belong to an organization that helps our library. We meet only once a month, on the fourth Thursday. All members are welcomed, but participation is optional. You might be wondering what The Friends do. Our biggest project was supplying the matching funds for the library expansion last year. At that time, we contributed $175,000 to augment the monies from Placer County so that our library could expand by almost one-third in size. In addition, we paid for new shelving and furniture, as well as carpeting. We also pay for the guest speakers and summer craft activities at the library for your children to enjoy. Through our efforts, books, books on CD and DVDs are purchased for the library. We have been called upon more and more in recent years to supply funding because of decreasing funds coming from Placer County. You might be wondering how we can do all this using only your $10 membership. Well, we can't. Our major fundraiser is the Christmas Craft Faire and “to-die-for” lasagna luncheon held in December. In addition, we hold book sales four times a year. It’s surprising to think that with only these events we've been able to do so much. On inauguration day, President Obama spoke of the importance of service. Service to our country, our state and our community were mentioned. Joining the Friends of the Loomis Library would be a great way to make a contribution to our community. At a time when the county is cutting its funding, you could become part of the solution by helping our library continue its excellent programs. If you're interested in joining us, send your check for $10 to Friends of the Loomis Library at P.O. Box 610, Loomis, CA 95650. If you have any questions please call Beth Enright at the Loomis Library, 652-7061. If you think you can't make a difference because you're only one person, just remember what Margaret Mead said: “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Jan Chimera is a member of the Friends of the Loomis Library.
