Crews expect to have both directions of Interstate 80 open by 2 p.m. today. The freeway was fully shut down at Colfax due to poor visibility Thursday afternoon. Westbound I-80 opened at about 11:50 a.m. today to vehicles, but was still closed to semi-trucks. "(The road) is not wide enough for them even though it's open," said Carol Herman, spokeswoman for the California Department of Transportation. Herman said eastbound I-80 is scheduled to reopen at 2 p.m. The record snowfall has kept a crew of about 200 employees and 135 pieces of equipment working around the clock. "I can tell you that we've had a record amount of snow and we are going into record levels," Herman said. Herman said that the last record set was in the early 1950s, when 700 inches of snow was reported at Castle Peak. "As of this morning we're at 704 inches and counting," Herman said. Herman said crews have been working to clear heavy amounts of snow that continue to slide onto the freeway. "They move to another location and it slides again," Herman said. ~ Jenifer Gee
