Evan Staton drove in the tying run in the seventh and the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth as Placer High rallied to beat host El Camino 9-8 Monday afternoon in extra innings. Staton’s two-run, two-out double in the seventh tied the score at 8. Two innings later, Staton hit a deep fly ball to score Caleb Mitchell, the eventual winning run. Mitchell also pitched four shutout innings in relief of starter Cameron Southward, who allowed 10 hits and struck out seven in five innings. Mitchell struck out six without a walk. Nick Mitchell clubbed a pair of solo home runs. Southward and Matt Ryan also had two hits for the Hillmen (5-2), who open Pioneer Valley League play Friday at home against Mesa Verde. Del Oro 7, Granite Bay 6 at Loomis — Max Magleby and Cole Perez hit three-run homers and Perez also drove in the winning run after Freddie Cargile led off the seventh with a double as the Golden Eagles won a back-and-forth Sierra Foothill League opener Monday. Brian Bynum, a Granite Bay transfer who sat out last season, pitched four strong innings against his former team. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and struck out five without walking a batter. Perez earned the win, scattering four hits and two earned runs in three innings of relief. Del Oro (4-1-1, 1-0 SFL) travels to play the Grizzlies again this afternoon.
