The Granite Bay High boys volleyball team opened its Sierra Foothill League North season Tuesday night with an impressive 3-0 win over Del Oro. Behind a powerful service game and a dominating presence at the net, the Grizzlies got up early and then put the Golden Eagles away 25-12, 25-6, 25-20. Senior Jack Powell got things started by serving a six-point run to open the initial game, and Granite Bay never looked back. Powell delivered seven kills in the match to lead the way at the net, while juniors Mason Jaynes and Tyler Menard set the table for the Granite Bay hitters. Senior Michael Naki also delivered a number of powerful points throughout the contest and senior Travis Wafeld was a difference-maker on the back line. The serving of Jaynes was crucial, and included a 10-point sequence to being the second game. The Grizzlies also received strong play from juniors Julian Capili, Tom Patterson and David Bittner. Granite Bay hosts Bay Area powerhouse Bellarmine Prep of San Jose Wednesday at 5 p.m. before returning to league action when Roseville comes to Granite Bay Thursday.
