Soroptimist International of Loomis Basin is accepting applications for three community awards. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women, ages 14 to 17, who make the community a better place, particularly for women and girls, through volunteer efforts. This winner receives $500 and an additional $500 for the non-profit of her choice. Applications are available from high school counselors or by calling Nancy Hogan at 530-613-1541. The Women?s Opportunity Award aids mature women entering the job market or returning to careers in order to support themselves and their families. The award aids women who need additional skills, training and education to upgrade their employability. Applications are due by December 15, 2010 and are available by calling Nancy Hogan at 530-613-1541. Teacher Grants will help fund long-term projects that will benefit numerous classes over time. Previous recipients have used the funds for books, music, science project equipment, historic costumes and other similar projects that benefit the students and community. Soroptimist is an international volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. The club supports Loomis Women?s Shelter, Loomis L.I.F.E. Center, KidsFirst and other community projects. Meetings are held Wednesday mornings at the Ugly Mug in Loomis.
