ROCKLIN — Mitchell Iwahiro of Granite Bay won the Sierra Foothill League tournament singles championship, and Roseville’s Dallas Guerrero and Alex Bychoviak claimed the doubles title Friday at Rocklin High School.
Iwahiro, the top seed, defeated Galen Champlin of Del Oro and Jan Arendain of Woodcreek 6-4, 6-1 before stopping Alex Agelakopoulos 6-2, 6-2 in the final.
Matt Thompson, the league MVP and No. 2 seed, fell to Agelakopoulos 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals but came back to beat Arendain for third place.
Thompson and Matt Iwahiro were seeded No. 1 for doubles play. They moved into the semifinals with a bye and a victory over the Rocklin duo of Hunter Snider and Brandon Yates, then defeated Del Oro’s Max Hennessey and Alexi Ezcurra 6-0, 7-6 (4).
But Guerrero and Bychoviak, seeded third, came through with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory in the championship match. Guerrero and Bychoviak also opened with a bye and beat Arendain and Dustin Hollis in the quarterfinals before topping Del Oro’s Champlin and Gabe Ezcurra 6-2, 6-4 in the semis.
Granite Bay, hit hard by graduation last spring, still won the SFL regular-season title with a 9-1 record, and that was the goal, according to first-year coach Greg Anderson. The Grizzlies started slow; they didn’t even have uniforms for their first match.
“We’ve caught fire at the right time,” said Anderson, who coached American River College to nine conference titles in a row, took a nine-year break and made his return this spring at Granite Bay.
