Granite Bay High School won the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters golf championship Monday with a record-low team score for the event.

The Grizzlies, fueled by 1-under-par 71 rounds by juniors Brandon Baumgarten and Bryan Wise, shot a team score of 3-over 363 at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton. It was the second-lowest team score in section championship history, section director of communications Will DeBoard said in an e-mail. Merced shot a 361 in 1986.

Christian Brothers, riding 67s by Andrej Bevins and Kit Carson, was second with a 367. Del Oro, led by medalist Austin Smotherman with a sizzling 7-under 65, was third with 372. All three teams qualified for the NorCal Championships on Monday at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico.

“This was huge,” Granite Bay coach Terry Stafford said. “When Christian Brothers came in with a 367, they thought they had it. Two 67s? No one is going to beat that, and we did. We knew it was going to be close.”

Baumgarten played the last 10 holes in 6 under. Wise played his last 15 holes in 4 under. Add in Alex Gibbs and Chuck Pedone, each at 1-over 73, and Jeff Inouye-Wong at 3-over 75, and Granite Bay achieved a goal by breaking 370 while breaking the school record of 365, formerly held by the 2005 team.

“It’s been pretty amazing. We’ve literally reached all our goals, so far,” Stafford said. “These guys were hitting the greens like crazy and putting like crazy.”

McClatchy’s Julian Woodfork, the Division II medalist May 8 at Rancho Murieta, shot a 67 and will move on to the NorCal tournament, as will Armijo’s Aaron Beverly, Oakdale’s Ryan Jones and Ponderosa’s Corey Pereira. All shot 70. Lee Gearhart of Woodcreek shot a 72 and Zach Will of Oakmont a 77.
