Granite Bay hoping for berth in State Bowl Games
Section commissioners are scheduled to meet Sunday to determine who will represent Northern and Southern California in the State Bowl Games in Carson.
Coach Ernie Cooper said following Granite Bay High School’s 30-24 victory over Pleasant Grove last Saturday the Grizzlies should be a part of that conversation.
“We definitely have to be a part of that,” Cooper said as Granite Bay celebrated its fourth Sac-Joaquin Section championship and first in Division I with a victory over a Pleasant Grove team that entered the season as one of the top-ranked teams in the nation.
Working in Granite Bay’s favor of landing the berth in the Division I game is a schedule that included 10 playoff teams.
“We had seven league champions on our schedule — seven league champions,” Cooper said. “Four of the teams played for either state or section titles (last) weekend. We beat the two best teams in our section the last two weeks. We definitely belong in the conversation. We played a monster preseason schedule, as good as anybody in the state.”
Working against Granite Bay (12-2) is its two losses, though they came at the hands of section champions Vacaville (Division II) and Del Oro (Division III).
Then there’s San Jose-Bellarmine (12-1), the Central Coast Section champ that has lost only to Concord-De La Salle.
De La Salle (11-1) probably will receive the Open bid. The Spartans (11-1) will play in the North Coast Section final today against San Ramon Valley, which they already have pounded 40-3 this season. De La Salle’s only loss was to St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Del Oro (13-1) has lost only to Westlake Village-Westlake and stands a solid chance of earning the Division II berth. Westlake (13-0) hasn’t won by fewer than 21 points since beating Del Oro 30-27 in overtime in the Battle at the Capital on Sept. 3.
