It was a make or break night for Granite Bay and Woodcreek high schools in the final Sierra Foothill League dual meet of the season Wednesday.

Granite Bay made it by defeating the visiting Timberwolves 54-17 in front of a big crowd in an intense atmosphere. Granite Bay won the first SFL wrestling title in school history by going 5-0 in league duals.

“It’s incredible,” coach Shane Dixon said. “The guys worked hard. They’ve done three-hour practices since November. They were here every break. Thanksgiving, over Christmas, every holiday they were in working hard. They did everything we asked them to do.”

Woodcreek went 3-2 in the SFL, tied with Roseville and Del Oro for second place. Roseville held the tiebreaker advantage over the Timberwolves and Del Oro and will advance with Granite Bay to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Team Duals on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Lincoln High School in Stockton.

The Grizzlies took three of four matches for an 18-4 lead. Shane Saylor won an 8-7 decision at 114 pounds, Sean Brown won 7-5 at 121, and Andrew Broadland pinned Quinn Walker with 54 seconds left in the 127-pound match. It was the first pin of the night for either team.

That’s when things started to get tight.

Woodcreek’s Austin Mason earned a 13-0 major decision over Daniel Flinders at 132 pounds. Peter Santos recorded Woodcreek’s only pin at 137, taking down Ian Mook with 41 seconds left in the second round. Angelo Ciaraglia then won a 4-0 decision over Phil Vogeley at 142 to pull the Timberwolves within 18-17.

That’s where the fun stopped for the Timberwolves, as Granite Bay went on a roll with six consecutive pins – by Johnny Cooley at 147 pounds, Adam Wagner at 154, Adam Godbey at 162, Connor Guzman at 173, Will Anderson at 191 and Kevin Blank at 217.

Woodcreek freshman Jimmy Gomez registered a 9-0 major decision over Chris Gallegos at 105 pounds, and Granite Bay heavyweight Gavin Andrews won by forfeit.

Roseville 44, Nevada Union 27 – Brandon Fratto at 121 pounds and Dylan Jankovich at 137 recorded pins to help the Tigers (3-2) defeat the Miners (1-4) and earn the second berth from the SFL in the Division II section team duals Saturday, Feb. 5, in Stockton.

Austin Ash at 162 and Austin Finerty at 173 had back-to-back major decisions for Roseville, and Jon Maroon (114) and Austin Dirks (147) also scored decisions.
Winning by forfeit for the Tigers were Vince Clarke (142), Ryan Fratto (191) and Jeff Minasian (287).
