The Del Oro Golden Eagles are knocking at the door of another Sierra Foothill League championship. The high-flying Black and Gold got one foot onto the SFL title path last Friday night by using a big first half to get on their way to a 45-20 rout of visiting Roseville. Celebrating homecoming night in a big way, the Golden Eagles used a 24-point, second quarter outburst to build a 31-7 lead by the halftime break, and then cruised home over the final two quarters. The win for the Casey Taylor-coached Golden Eagles gives Del Oro a SFL record of 4-0 and at least a piece of the league title. Now, 8-1 overall for the season, Del Oro will be looking to clinch the outright SFL flag when they visit Woodcreek on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Friday’s is also important for the Golden Eagles as a regular-season closing win would most likely boost a 9-1 Black and Gold squad into a top first or second seed in either the Div. II or Div. III playoffs, which begin Nov. 11. Del Oro will find out its playoff destination on Sunday afternoon, when the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section releases its playoff bracketing for its 64-team Div. I-IV playoff system that is enrollment-based. “We want to finish strong at Woodcreek because there’s still a lot at stake,” said Taylor. “A high seed could lead to three home playoff games down the road. We’ll see how it goes.” Del Oro made it known early that all its weapons were firing last Friday as quarterback Bobby Heatherington hit on 11 of 14 passes for 217 yards and tossed two scoring passes to Alex Bertrando and another to Russell Smith. The Golden Eagles running game also provided balance as senior Nick O’Sullivan churned out 134 yards on 20 carries, while backfield sidekick Brandon Monroe added 67 more on 13 packs and scored two touchdowns. Kicker Skylar Rand also got into the act with a perfect 6 for 6 on extra point kicks, while also adding a 21-yard field goal. On defense, Austin Soldano provided spark with a pass interception.
