The Del Oro Lady Eagles took a huge step toward the school’s first Sierra Foothill League softball championship since 2002 by taking a scintillating 1-0 win over Roseville last Friday afternoon on their home field. The key win, coming in a madcap of a SFL race in which five schools are bunched within two games of each other, boosted the Lady Eagles’ league mark to 8-2 going into this week’s final two regular season games. Del Oro was slated to end its SFL slate with a game Wednesday at Oakmont and a contest Friday at home versus Granite Bay. Coming into this week’s games, Del Oro (8-2) held a lead over Woodcreek (6-3), Rocklin (7-4) and Roseville and Oakmont, both 6-4. In the Del Oro-Roseville game, the contest developed into a pitcher’s duel between Lady Eagle Savannah Pingree and Roseville’s Kiana Levy. Both pitchers allowed just two hits with Pingree fanning seven and walking none. Del Oro tallied the game’s lone run in the fourth inning when Annette Merjano singled , was sacrificed to second and then scored on a RBI hit from Pingree. The Lady Eagles also appear to have locked up a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II playoff berth as the top three squads from the SFL will advance to the post season that will begin on Friday, May 15, at the Sacramento Softball Complex.
