The Del Oro High softball team blazed past Woodcreek, 7-3, in Monday’s Sac Joaquin Section Division II playoff game. Just as their section title hopes were dwindling, the Golden Eagle’s (15-7 overall) put on a big show against the Timberwolves (18-6 overall) at the bottom of the fifth, racking up five runs. Junior Whitney Smith, who went 2-3 at bat, got the party started with two RBIs, bringing in Courtney Smith and Carissa Cotter. Teammate senior Ciera Clark, who was up to bat next, creamed the ball out of the park for a three-run homer, sealing the win against the Timberwolves. Golden Eagles pitcher Jordan Courage had one run, while Whitney Smith had another. Junior Hannah George had a double. Smith and Clark agree that keeping their cool under pressure was the key. Del Oro was down 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. “I was up to bat and knew I just needed a base hit or a pop fly,” Smith said. “I had confidence in myself.” Smith said that while the hit was satisfying, it was the efforts of the entire team that paid off. For Clark that meant overcoming a rocky start. “I was in a huge slump. I went 0-2 my first time at bat,” Clark said. “This is my senior year I need to go big or go home and not let too much pressure get to me. It felt good to hit the ball.” The Golden Eagles will take their heavy-hitting skills with them into tomorrow night’s game against at the Sacramento Softball Complex, scheduled for 6 p.m. Clark said she has her eyes focused on one goal. “I’m so excited for it,” Clark said. “I’m going to try to make it happen. I want to get a section title.” Reach Sara Seyydin at
