Golden Eagles go up early, hold off Hillmen

Both teams had stars sitting on the bench with injuries, but Placer and Del Oro still managed to come up with a spirited effort on the basketball court Tuesday night at Earl Crabbe Gym. The Golden Eagles soared to a 76-64 victory, building an early lead and fending off the Hillmen in the second half. Nick Lewis poured in 25 points and Aaron Hendricks hit several big shots late in the game and finished with 21 to lead Del Oro (4-0). Placer (4-4) got 21 points from Darren Centi and 22 from James Taber in the loss. Taber added 12 rebounds and three steals. Down 33-16 at halftime, the Hillmen got within nine points in the third quarter, but Hendricks’ 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer gave his team a 51-35 advantage. Placer again rallied to pull within eight points in the final from before Del Oro pulled away. Del Oro was without senior forward Spencer Butterfield, who is nursing an ankle injury. Placer was missing senior forward Josh Klem, who could return from a knee injury this weekend. Colfax 80, Argonaut 42 at Colfax — The Falcons cruised with a balanced effort at home. Senior Justin Witt scored 15 points and ripped six steals to lead Colfax (5-1). Chase Mosier added nine points while Joey Jergo and Kyle Greer scored nine apiece for the Falcons. Bear River 61, Golden Sierra 28 at Lake of the Pines — The Bruins won big at home without starters Jonny Jewett and Jordan Beskeen, who were out with ankle injuries. Cody Lamarche, Johnny Cassar and Shawn Smith each scored 10 points to lead Bear River. Will Gray scored six points in the second quarter as Bear River pulled away.
