Editor’s Note: This is the first of three columns chronicling the student-athletes of Colfax High, Del Oro, and Placer. The athletes of these three schools helped their respective schools to achieve success on the field while at the same time, they were stars in the classroom.

Competing in the rugged Sierra Foothill League, Del Oro, once again, proved it can compete with the best in the area. This year Del Oro won league titles in girls’ cross country, girls’ basketball, wrestling, boys’ and girls’ golf, and girls’ track.
Savannah Pingree: Pingree will be attending Willamette University in Salem, Ore. on an athletic scholarship. She was the SFL MVP for two years, and was all-league for three years.
Jesse Stafford: Stafford will be attending the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. on a wrestling scholarship. In addition to finishing second in the state in wrestling, he also will receive a special award from Del Oro High for competing in three sports — cross-country, wrestling, and track for four years.
Josh McCormick: Traveling across the country, McCormick will attend the Merchant Marine Academy in Long Island, New York on a swimming scholarship. He was a two-time all America swimmer, a two-time all section in water polo, and first-team All-Metro in water polo.
Jessica Mixon: Mixon has left her mark on the Del Oro track program. She is a four year letterman in track. She holds the school record in the triple jump and is the league champ in the high jump. Mixon will be attending Cal State Northridge in the fall.
Spencer Butterfield: No athlete graced the front page of the Auburn Journal sports section more than Butterfield. He was also an all-Sierra Foothill League basketball and football players for two years. In addition, he was honored as one of the region’s top scholar-athletes. Butterfield will attend Yuba College in the fall and play basketball.
Emily Mattevi: Mattevi was a first-team all-league selection in volleyball her senior year. She also ran on the track team her final year at Del Oro. She will be attending Cal Poly SLO after graduation.
Kelsey Seaman: According to Del Oro’s athletic director Monte White, Seaman, “epitomizes what a Del Oro athlete would look like. It’s about the team and the experience.” Seaman ran cross country, track, and played basketball. She will attend Azusa-Pacific University next year.
Travis Doupnik: Earning a 3.6 GPA, Doupnik was a standout lineman for the football team. He was an all-league selection his junior and senior year. In addition, Doupnik was acknowledged as one of the top scholar-athletes in football for the Sacramento region. Colorado University in Boulder will be his destination in the fall.
Jason Armes: Despite breaking his neck playing water polo his junior year, Armes focused on swimming his senior year to qualify for the sections in the 500 meters. Like so many students in the area, the siren call of the ocean beckons. Armes will be attending Cal Poly SLO next year.
Bethany Milton: A three-sport workhorse for the Golden Eagles, Milton played golf, basketball and soccer for three years. While not competing, she earned a 3.7 GPA in the classroom. Milton will attend Sierra College in August.
