Del Oro to host Cardinal Newman Saturday
In a see-saw battle that featured big-play offenses and hard-hitting defenses, a inter-sectional battle in Idaho Sept. 13 between Del Oro and Lake City, Idaho came down to an extra point. And when the dust had settled after the exciting back-and-forth contest, Lake City of Coeur d’Alene pulled out a thrilling 34-33 win over the Golden Eagles. Del Oro quarterback Mason Magleby had an outstanding game in his varsity debut as a starter, passing for more than 250 yards and rushing for over 125. He hit Freddie Cargile with a long touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to put Del Oro on top 33-27. But Lake City, which played in Idaho’s 5A state semi-finals last season, scored the tying touchdown and kicked the game-winning extra point with just under three minutes left in the game. The Eagles’ final drive was thwarted when Magleby scrambled on fourth down and was tackled just inches short of a first down. “Our first three kickers were hurt and Freddie (Cargile) did a great job, but it kind of came down to a couple of kicks,” Del Oro coach Casey Taylor said. “Our kids played really hard. I was real proud of them. Magleby had a phenomenal game.” Junior receiver Spencer Butterfield was on his way to a monster game until going down with an injury in the second quarter. Butterfield had more than 100 receiving yards and two touchdown catches before leaving with the leg injury. His status for Friday’s game against Cardinal Newman is unknown. Joe Brunet led the Del Oro defense with 14 tackles. The Golden Eagles will host Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
