A showcase game to open the season, three non-league games against perennial Northern California powers and a five consecutive week home stand highlight the 2009 Del Oro High football schedule which was released this past week by Golden Eagles head coach Casey Taylor. Like the past two seasons, Del Oro will begin its 10-game regular slate with a showcase game but unlike recent trips to Washington state in 2007 and Idaho last year, the Golden Eagles’ opener will instead be Sacramento’s Hughes Stadium at the “Battle At The Capital” on Sat. Sept. 12 against California High of San Ramon. The “Battle At The Capital” will feature four games on Sept. 12. The Del Oro-California High game will be the 8 p.m. feature game. The remaining schedule in the showcase event will match Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco vs. Franklin of Elk Grove, Granite Bay vs. Pittsburgh and Central Catholic of Modesto taking on Cardinal Newman. Del Oro’s remaining non-league games will be highlighted by a trip to Santa Rosa on Sept. 19 to battle defending state Div. III state finalist Cardinal Newman. The game will be the fourth straight year that the Golden Eagles and Cardinals have met. Newman holds a 2-1 lead in the series. Following the Cardinal Newman game, Del Oro will return home for five consecutive home games beginning on Fri. Sept. 25 with a first-time foe in Franklin of Elk Grove. Del Oro then hosts Merced (Oct. 2) and Vintage of Napa (Oct. 9) to complete its non-league games. “We’re excited about our schedule,” said Taylor. “We’ve got some new teams we haven’t played and we’re playing some schools that traditionally are tough year in and year out.” The Golden Eagles open their Sierra Foothill League schedule with back-to-back home games against the two defending co-SFL champions Granite Bay (Oct. 16) and Roseville (Oct. 23). The final three regular season games for Del Oro will be on the road as the Golden Eagles have away tilts at Woodcreek (Oct. 30), Rocklin (Nov. 6) and Oakmont (Nov. 13). 2009 Del Oro High Football Sat.
